How PayPal fees work
PayPal charges the seller when you get paid for goods or services. Paying for a purchase with PayPal is free unless it involves a currency conversion. What you pay as the seller depends on how the buyer pays you:
- Goods and services payment (Send/Receive Money): 2.99% of the payment. On $50 you keep $48.50.
- PayPal Checkout on your website: 3.49% + $0.49. On $100 you keep $96.02.
These rates come from PayPal's merchant fees page, which PayPal's consumer fees page points to for selling rates. The goods and services rate has no fixed fee. PayPal Checkout and most other commercial rates add a fixed fee, which is $0.49 for US dollars.
Buyers outside the US
When the buyer is registered with PayPal in another country, PayPal adds 1.50% to the domestic rate. On a $100 goods and services payment that is $4.49 in fees, so you keep $95.51. Turn on the international fee in the calculator to include it.
Getting your money out
From a personal account:
- Standard transfer to a linked bank account or eligible debit card is free when no currency conversion is involved.
- Instant transfer costs 1.75% of the amount, with a minimum fee of $0.25 and a maximum of $25.
Transfer fees aren't included in the calculator, because they are charged when you move money out, not on each sale.
How to pay less on PayPal
- Take goods and services payments instead of PayPal Checkout when you don't need checkout on a website. On $100 that is $2.99 instead of $3.98.
- Use standard transfers. Instant transfer adds 1.75% when you move money out.
